I love my dog. I know that I am not the only one. Yes, that is her pictured above. She is a Cairn Terrier. Guess who also was a Cairn? Toto from the Wizard of Oz is probably the most famous! His real name was Terry but he stole the show! Despite my Bunny having a ruff (pun intended) beginning, she is the most amazing example of pure love and knowing her worth.
Bunny Love came from a household that did not want a dog but there was a young child there who loved her. The adults kept her most of the time in a small crate in their porch even in the middle of winter! I believe this is bad for any dog but to do this to smaller dogs is just plain cruelty. Someone in my family got the call. We had to help this dog so we did. You could tell she had no social skills and did not even know how to use toys. Later I found out she knew how to sit, stay and paw five. This was obviously taught to her by the child in the family. She was pretty wild and aloof in the beginning. One time she got out of the house and we had to enlist the neighbors to help us get her. Also, she used to fight with all of our other dogs looking like a werewolf. But you would never know any of that now. She is the sweetest, loving, always trying to please but demanding dog that I know.
What transformed her? While love was a main component there were several other factors. She needed to be walked. Cairn Terriers will get behavior problems if they are not walked regularly. Bunny instantly bonded with me when I started her walks. Also, I know she really appreciates having her needs met. Don’t we all? She used to get jealous when I played with any of our other dogs but now she knows she is loved. Bunny is not holding onto the past in anyway. She has completely let go of her former mistreatment and fully enjoying her life now.
It has not been easy with Bunny Love. She hashad health issues and requires extra special care. There is no way of knowing what the future holds. I recommend putting away money in a doggie fund. At least that is what I do now. Or you can insure your dog but make sure you really check out the company and it is not one of those that will jack up the price in their senior years. She has an extreme fear of thunder and even with pharmecutical help, it is still a traumatic experience. I have had to cancel many plans in order to not to leave her alone during that time. I am not sure who gets more stressed out – us or her? We have become experts at future thunder casting in this house. Having any pet is work but she has given us the greatest give of pure unconditional love. Things once have looked very bleak when she was locked up in that cage but now she has a custom made stairs to the bed. As my husband always says her doggie prayers were answered. Never give up!
