Every New Year’s Eve at midnight is a chance to kiss away the old year and begin again. I feel that while new beginnings are always welcome, having to do this at a particular point in time and space can be a trap.
For starters, it can put a lot of pressure on this one particular day for change, something that I can be hard to live up to. Part of me still likes having some sort of timeline for this so I try to make use of it for starting the new and getting rid of the old. This year, I ended up being sick for most of November and December. And the week before New Year’s I had some sort of relapse. So, my planned intention of starting out the New Year in an immaculately clean house was out. In fact, today on New Year’s Day, I was cleaning our bathroom thinking to myself that I can’t do this on New Years Day. But what was I supposed to do? Take a shower in a dirty shower? And the rest of our home is in a cleaning flux. My husband is at the gym which was one of things I wanted to put in the New Year’s resolutions as well as the rest of the world but I still don’t feel healthy enough to work out. I know there have been studies that people who start the gym heavy for the New Year drop out but nonetheless I am sure the gyms are packed.
At any moment in time, we can begin again. We don’t even have to wait for it to be midnight or the next day. That is something that must be remembered. I have so many things that I want to change but if I try to do it all in one day or start them all in one day – I will get overloaded. It’s also important that if you make a New Year’s resolution and then break it or slip or whatever – do not beat yourself up. Shit happens. It’s ok. Just start again if this is something you really want to do. I don’t think the road to anything great is perfect. The key is to keep doing or as my fortune cookie said this week …
And let’s not forget there is the Chinese New Year in February as well as other traditions that celebrate at different times. Who says it has to be December 31st?
